Name that Puppy!

Have you ever had a puppy for so long that you end up calling him Deogi (d.o.g.)? If so, you probably need a little inspiration. There are so many ways to name your dog some good, some not so much. I mean, if you get a 7-week-old Rotti and he pees on your rug a couple of times, you might be tempted to call him something appropriate like, say, Puddles. That might be cute for now, but the goal is to eventually housebreak your puppy. Can you imagine what he would feel like in 2 years when he is 175 pounds and you are at the dog park calling, "Puddles! Time to go home and get your chewy!" Talk about a complex!

I mean, sometimes it is kinda funny (i.e., naming your 4-pound Chihuahua King or Killer), but you really have to be careful.

There is also the tendency to name your puppy after a beverage. I have known dogs named Bud, Coors, Mickey, Miller-you name it, I've heard it. That might be funny on Saturday night, but eventually when you sober up you may find out it was not such a good idea after all. Like, suppose your wife tells you it's rehab or she's outta there. You love your wife. You don't want her to go away FOREVER! So-off to rehab. Problem is, you eventually get out. Then you get to go home to your wife and Busch. Yikes! Do I need to elaborate?

I think it is important to name your puppy something you can see him coming to at the dog park when he is 5 years old. For a little dog, it is a lot easier becasue they still look like a puppy at 5. But what about a Great Dane or a Mastiff puppy? Fluffy or Poo-Bear may get you bit.

On my website, http://www.doggybooty.com/, I have a puppy-naming service. When someone wants help naming their puppy, they can fill out a form that asks a few questions, such as what kind of puppy, boy or girl, type of coat, personality, etc. I then take the information and search hundreds of different databases to come up with a list of 15 potential names. It is a lot of fun. There are a TON of catagories:
1. Traditional names
2. Modern names.
3. Names based on puppy's origin.
4. Funny names {what's his name? (Askim)}.
5. Inspirational names.
6. Made-up names (I have a Lhasa/Westie mix named Lhatie. Get it Lha-tie?).

The list goes on, but you get the idea.

So anyway, I thought it might be fun to post a blog and see if anyone can come up with some great names to help me out a little. What's your dog's name? What are your friends' dogs names? I would like to get a list going of some awesome dog names. I already started with Lhatie. She is the puppy on the Name that Puppy! section of my homepage on http://www.doggybooty.com/.
